Our first trip since we moved to Ghent could only be in Bruges . From the Sint-Pieters station in Gent you can easily reach Bruges by train (it takes between 20 and 40 minutes depending on the type of train). Being in the middle of autumn, the weather was not the best, in fact the sky was cloudy all morning, but in the afternoon we were lucky and were able to enjoy a few hours of sunshine. We wanted to see / do a lot of things, but we thought that for some it would be better to wait for the Christmas markets. Stay tuned then! Here are the 7 things to do in Bruges in one day .

7 THINGS TO DO IN BRUGES IN ONE DAY

1. WALK ALONG THE CANALS

Also known as the " Venice of the North ", Bruges is a town crossed by several canals that can already be seen as soon as you leave the train station. We loved walking between the various bridges, some of them gave us very suggestive views .

2. GO TO THE MARKET SQUARE

Among the things to do in one day, you cannot miss a visit to the Grote Markt , the main square of the city. The characteristic of this square is the row of houses with pointed spiers and the presence of the imposing civic tower ( Beffroi ), 83 meters high, declared a UNESCO heritage site and on which it is possible to climb and enjoy a splendid view of the city. We hope to be able to return at Christmas time and see all the markets from above!

3. VISIT SPECIAL MUSEUMS

In Bruges you will find several museums to visit, the most important are certainly the Gruuthusemuseum and the OLV-kerk Museum (or Museum of the Church of Our Lady), but we actually decided to see something else and in fact we went to discover the Choco-story museum , or rather the chocolate museum, where at the end we witnessed a demonstration by experts. After that we went to visit the Torture museum , which was a bit macabre it must be admitted. Another particular museum that we definitely want to visit next time we go to Bruges will be the Frietmuseum (the french fries museum)!

4. HAVE LUNCH WITH FRIES

Do you know what typical Belgian food is? That's right, the french fries ! We opted for Casa Patata . Yes, the name is a bit funny but we can assure you that the food was very good with a very good quality / price ratio. In addition, you can decide to have the dishes served with beef or chicken or eat them without anything (obviously not the case with those in the photo!).

5. WALK THROUGH THE CENTER WITH WARM WAFFLES

So we have to admit that the typical sweet of Bruges is definitely chocolate , since there is also a museum dedicated to this delight, but we couldn't resist and we bought some waffles for a walk ! I am super chubby with Nutella and bananas, while Marco is a little easier with honey! Both were still delicious, mouth-watering!

6. SEE BEGIJNHOF

Near the Minnewaterpark you will find the fifth thing to do in Bruges: see the Beguinage . It is a group of white houses around a tree-lined garden, once inhabited by the Beguines of Bruges. Since 1998 it has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site and can be visited every day from 6.30 to 18.30 . So if you are around the Minnewaterpark you cannot miss this piece of Belgian history.

7. KISSING IN THE MINNEWATER: THE LAKE OF LOVE

Bruges is truly a romantic city, ideal for a couple's trip. Among the most suggestive places, we recommend the Minnewater . It is also called the " lake of love " and is located in the south of Bruges, next to the Minnewaterpark . We decided to visit it at the end of the day and with the sun already set the atmosphere was even more romantic. However, if you intend to visit this place, you cannot miss a kiss in front of the lake of lovers.
